Celebrating Janice!

Janice was born in San Rafael, California, at a time when her father was at Golden Gate Seminary. Soon after, her family began moving frequently—her dad served his entire career as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy. That meant a childhood growing up all over the world! By the time she graduated high school in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Janice had attended nine different schools between kindergarten and 12th grade.
Perhaps it was this transient lifestyle that led to her love of travel.

After high school, Janice headed to Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, OK, where she earned her degree in Accounting. She says she chose the field because she was good at it—and she proved it. But college was also marked by a life-changing event: at just 19 years old, between her sophomore and junior years, Janice underwent heart surgery for pericarditis, a condition where the lining of the heart becomes calcified. At the time of her surgery, the surgeon said it was 1-1/2" thick and would have caused a terminal heart attack within months. Doctors told her the condition could have stemmed from malaria (which she never had) or from a long-term, low-grade fever her mother recalled her complaining of back in 5th grade. Luckily, the heart itself was uninjured and there have been no long-standing effects.

Following graduation, Janice stayed in Oklahoma, beginning her career as an accountant in Shawnee and then working in Oklahoma City. After she married, she and her husband settled in Ada, Oklahoma—a small town where, as Janice puts it, “everyone knew everyone.” She built her career there over 22 years, starting as a staff accountant at Horne and Company and eventually becoming a partner.
Janice and her husband raised two children—her son, John, who now lives in Colorado with his wife (both are dentists), and her daughter, Laney, who lives in Nashville. After a divorce and some years on her own, Janice made the big move in 2018, encouraged by her daughter, who was expecting her first child. In fact, Janice interviewed for first Nashville role as a Tax Manager at Carr, Riggs & Ingram while her daughter was in labor with her first grandchild!
Today, Janice is a proud grandmother of three—two granddaughters, ages 7 and 2, and a grandson, age 4. Being close to them in Nashville is one of her greatest joys.

When asked about her favorite place to live during her Navy-brat years, Janice recalls Rota, Spain and Charleston, South Carolina. In Spain, she had two especially memorable experiences. At 16, she and her mother and sister took a Moroccan tour where a carpet dealer famously offered her mom 500 camels in exchange for Janice as his third wife! Around the same time, she also participated in Model United Nations in high school, which took her all the way to The Hague—a highlight of her young life.

In 2021, Janice moved to her current position as Senior Tax Manager with the High Net Worth group at Frazier & Deeter, LLC.

I so enjoyed photographing Janice and hearing about her remarkable life as part of the 40 Over 40 Campaign-capturing both her confident professional side and her warm, fun loving side that loves to travel and play with her grandkids.

This session wasn’t just about new photos. It was about honoring a milestone, embracing all that life that brought her here, and looking to all that lies that lies ahead.
