40 Over 40: All About Wendy

So Much to Discover about Wendy!! Enjoy the read!

Wendy was such a delight to meet and photograph for the 40 Over 40 campaign. Her session was full of energy, laughter, and even a little music—her accordion, affectionately named Nutella (Ella for short), made a cameo in a few portraits.
Wendy was born and raised in Monroe, Louisiana, though she moved nine times before the age of 18—all within northeast Louisiana. In high school, she was active in the Children of the American Revolution, where she learned public speaking skills, serving in numerous local, state, and national offices —a first taste of leadership and advocacy.

Her academic path is as fascinating as it is unique. She earned her undergraduate degree at Vanderbilt University, combining two seemingly opposite (but actually related) passions: math and music.  After gradutation, not knowing exactly what she wanted to do, her father, a life insurance agent, encouraged her to become an actuary.  He once bribed her shortly after college with a gallon jug of Tabasco sauce to encourage her to take the first exam--she wasn't convinced, given that she could more easily buy her own jug of Tabasco rather put in the many hours of study..  She went ahead and attempted the exam, but her score of 5 was short of the passing score of 6).  So, instead she began temping, eventually ending up back at Vanderbilt temping in various University departments, ending up in temping in various Vanderbilt Medical departments

Then she decided, why not follow up that math degree with the obvious next step--getting a master's degree at Western Kentucky University in folk studies, with emphases in German, linguistics, and Celtic studies (a natural interest since she had taken upcompetitive Scottish Highland dancer after college).  During this time, she traveled severl times to Scotland (with a bit of hitchhiking there) and also traveled to Wales with her Celtic band (playing hammered dulcimer).

She met her husband Franko, now was-band (but still friends), at a Renaissance festival in Pennsylvania and married a year later.  In Nashville, before the birth of her second daughter, she landed her first full-time role as a benefits analyst at HCA.  After six years at HCA, Wendy craved a new challenge and moved into underwriting at Cigna.  A layoff from Cigna during the Great Recession was ultimately a blessing in disguise which led her to pass her first actuarial exam at the age of 45, more than 20 years after her father's urging.   This led to a job in the specialized world of reinsurance brokering, a field she where she still works today. Along the way, she continued tackling the notoriously difficult actuarial exams. Taking most of these exams on her own time and own dime without being in actuarial role eventually paid off with her achieving her ASA (Associate of the Society of Actuaries) designation, a major professional milestone.

Her current hus-man (husband without the band) is Chris and they have been friends for 20 years and have shared their lives together for the last 12.  They love to travel and enjoy good meals.

Wendy loves to try new things!  At 30, she took up Irish step dancing, a passion that grew into her becoming a certified teacher (TCRG) from An Coimisiun le Rinci Gaelacha (Irish Dance Commission) and founding the Scott-Ellis Irish Dance School in Nashville. More recently, she added the button accordion as a new passion.

Wendy continues her work in reinsurance as a broker and actuary while taking time to do the things that light her up--playing music, reading, teaching Irish dance, time with her daughters and friends, hiking, baking, and travel with Chris. Recent trips have taken them to Geneva, Chamonix, Courmayeur, Milan, and Turin.

Wendy’s photoshoot beautifully captured her personality—her determination, kindness, zest for life, and constant curiosity. It was an honor to celebrate her through this campaign.
