40 Over 40: All About Candice

By: Colleen Neel Photography

Candice has led a FULL life so far with a lot more on the horizon!

Candice Reed chose to take some time out of her busy schedule and come in for a photo session to celebrate how far she's come in personal growth and to embrace joy after a difficult year in which both her (only slightly older) brother and father both died of cancer.

Growing up in East Tennessee among a family of educators, Candice originally planned to teach Shakespeare and creative writing to angsty teens as a high school English teacher, but ultimately found her way to law school instead.

The only lawyer in her family, Candice began her legal career practicing business litigation and commercial bankruptcy law in a large regional firm in Nashville, but after a few years was lured away from the practice of law by a friend in the legal recruiting industry. She joined Counsel On Call  and within just a few months was promoted to an executive leadership role, managing the daily operations and sales activity of the company’s home office in Nashville and simultaneously served as VP for Recruitment and Placement, training and overseeing corporate employees nationwide.

In this position, Candice had the opportunity to meet and interview hundreds of attorneys in various practice areas and positions. While she found the legal profession to be filled with a diverse array of intelligent, hard-working, creative people, she noted the one thing many of them had in common – a general malaise about their jobs. Intrigued and disheartened by the number of lawyers who struggled with burnout and career dissatisfaction, Candice embarked on an unexpected career pivot that would ultimately change her life, personally and professionally.

In 2008, while continuing to work full-time, Candice surprised her family and coworkers by going back to school and entered the Master of Applied Positive Psychology program at the University of Pennsylvania under the leadership of world-renowned psychologist, Martin E. P. Seligman, Ph.D. There, she studied what enables individuals and groups to thrive, focusing on those conditions and processes that foster strengths, resilience, well-being, and meaning or fulfillment. Ultimately, she would use this degree as a springboard for starting her own consulting firm, through which she worked with lawyers and their firms on topics related to professional development and well-being.

Candice also returned to the practice of law, serving as Chief Ethics Officer and senior in-house legal counsel for Ceridian and later, its related company, Comdata.

Then, in the summer of 2013, when she was 8 months pregnant with her first (and only) child, Candice received a call from her friend and former law school classmate, Ross Booher, with an interesting proposition . . . to start a new business, which would ultimately become Latitude, a globally ranked flexible legal talent company that specializes in providing highly skilled former in-house counsel and Big Law attorneys for contract engagements and permanent positions with corporate legal departments and law firms nationwide.

Thirteen years and fifteen offices later, Candice currently serves as Latitude’s Executive Vice President and tracks the company’s years in business by the number of candles on her kid’s birthday cake.

Candice also joined the “family business” back in 2019, when she began teaching an upper-level course she created, entitled Thriving as a Lawyer, at The University of Tennessee Winston College of Law – the side hustle she commonly refers to as her passion project.

She also sits on the College’s Advisory Board for the Institute for Professional Leadership. And in addition to her law school position, she regularly draws upon her legal experience and studies in positive psychology in speaking to lawyers and their organizations on topics such as attorney wellbeing, professional development and leadership, workplace engagement, and career satisfaction and transition.

With a seemingly indefatigable energy, Candice also carves out time to serve the Nashville community. She is a Nashville Bar Association Fellow and former NBA YLD Board Member, a TBA member and TBA YLD Fellow, and former President of Nashville’s Lawyers’ Association for Women (LAW). She also is a former Board Member and now serves on the Advisory Board for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Nashville. She also was a “celebrity” dancer (2021), with dance partner Michael Hosale, and co-chaired Dancing for Safe Haven, the largest annual fundraiser to benefit Safe Haven Family Shelter, in 2022 and 2023.

And don’t think Candice is all work and no play, she knows how to multitask. A few fun facts about Candice: she has jumped out of an airplane; she has sung the National Anthem at a Nashville Sounds game; she served in AmeriCorps right out of college; and she likes to write, dabbles in ballroom dancing and is currently trying out watercolor painting.

In her downtime she enjoys attending a live theater production or concert with a friend, reading a book curled up on her couch, walking the trails in her Brentwood neighborhood or hosting a backyard party for family.

On Friday nights, she loves to hang out with her kiddo, watching movies, laughing at their jokes and eating pizza.

It was so interesting to get to know Candice at her shoot! She has accomplished a lot in a short time, yet is warm and personable and a lot of fun! You can see her zest for life in her images and her engaging smile which makes it easy to see how she makes friends everywhere she goes.

Love how we showcased several of her business interests and her personal side in her images.

While the 40 Over 40 project is coming to a close, if you need new headshot and branding images for your website, socials, speaking engagements, writer bios and more, I would love to collaborate on fresh on brand images for YOU too!
