So it's time to update your business photos for so many needs: LinkedIn, your website, a rebrand, author or speaker engagements and the list goes on...
Is it worth hiring a professional? Or you can just make it work with your phone, a friend's camera, or one of those AI headshot apps.
It's a fair question. Professional photos are an investment.
But there are some things a selfie, AI, or DIY session just can't give you. A professional photographer can make all the difference, especially in how you and your business are perceived.
When you're taking your own photo—whether it's a selfie, a self-timer, or even having a friend take it, you can't see what you actually look like in that moment.
You can't see yourself as others do.
That's what a professional photographer does. They're watching everything—your posture, your expression, the angle of your head, whether you're tense or relaxed. Adjusting things in real time so what you think you're doing actually shows up the way you want it to in the photo.
You're being directed the whole time. Little adjustments happen as you go, you're relaxed and the photos are happening naturally. You're not guessing. You're being guided into the best version of yourself.
A professional photographer knows which angles flatter different face shapes. How to position your body so you look confident without looking stiff.
Lighting matters. I see terrible lighting in headshots and portraits all the time—harsh shadows, unflattering angles, lighting that washes people out or makes them look tired. A professional photographer knows light. How to use it, shape it, and make it work for you instead of against you.
The equipment matters, but the person behind it matters way more.
THIS. When you start to feel confident in your photographer and comfortable in the session, you look confident.
Most people are nervous. They're worried they'll look awkward, that they're "not photogenic," that they won't know what to do.
A professional photographer takes that stress off you. You're told exactly what to do, where to look, how to stand. Adjustments happen. And you feel comfortable the whole time.
When you feel comfortable, you look comfortable. When you're relaxed, your expression is genuine.
That's what we're aiming for in professional headshots and branding photos—a blend of authenticity with confidence.
Let's talk about the elephant in the room: AI-generated headshots.
They're cheap. They're fast. And they all look... the same.
Here's what you're missing with AI:
No photoshoot experience. You don't get that confidence boost that comes from being professionally photographed. You don't get to see yourself how others see you.
Zero guidance or direction. An algorithm can't tell you to relax your shoulders or shift your weight. It can't coach you into looking natural.
They're not genuine. People can tell. There's something slightly off—the lighting, the expression, the way it doesn't quite look like a real photo. People want authenticity, especially now when no can tell what is real or AI.
No variety in expression. You get one look. Maybe two. You don't get the range of natural expressions that are brought out of you in an actual session where you're working with a photographer to capture different sides of you.
AI might work for a placeholder. But if you're trying to build trust, attract better clients, or stand out? It's not going to cut it.
So when does it make sense to hire a professional?
Job hunting. Launching or rebranding your business. Attracting better clients. Your current photo is years old and doesn't look like you anymore.
Your headshot shows up on LinkedIn, your website, your email signature, your marketing. It's working for you (or against you) every single day.
A professional photo shows you take yourself seriously. A DIY photo doesn't.
When you hire a professional headshot photographer, you're paying for years of experience knowing what works, a trained eye that sees what you can't, real-time direction so you look natural, professional lighting and equipment, a guided experience where you're not left guessing, and confidence knowing the photos will be ones your are proud to use.
I would love to take your headshots, branding photos or your whole teams' headshots.
