40 Over 40: Lisa's Story

Read all about Lisa!!!

Lisa is an artisan jewelry designer and metalsmith whose connection to the craft runs deep. Born in Florida and raised in Augusta, Georgia, she grew up in a family where jewelry was part of daily life: her father worked for a large jewelry-store chain and a great-uncle owned a jewelry store in Baltimore. Her mother collected antique and estate fine jewelry from a wide range of eras and styles. From an early age, Lisa was captivated by the colors and tactile qualities that defined the pieces around her, and she understood that jewelry holds more than beauty—it also carries culture, and memory.

During childhood, Lisa spent school breaks working in the jewelry store—an early education that shaped her eye and trained herhands long before she realized the craft would become her life’s work.

Working her way through college, Lisa pursued studies in sociology, cultural anthropology, and art history, fields that deepened her understanding of how objects embody culture, meaning, and history. This academic foundation continues to influence her creative perspective and the cultural depth of her designs. Her work blends ancient handworking techniques with modern tools, balancing the roles of artist, craftsperson, and documentarian of human emotion and connection.

After college, Lisa began a career in healthcare marketing, earning a promotion that brought her to the company’s corporate office in Nashville. She ultimately made Nashville home, working in healthcare marketing and communications—specializing in imaging, organ donation, and long-term care—before transitioning into the data and internet services industry as a sales manager and technical advisor.

The events of September 11th, and the loss of a cousin in the attack, prompted Lisa to reevaluate her path. With her mother’s encouragement, she chose to devote herself fully to the craft that had been her dream since childhood. What began as a part-time job and creative outlet soon became a calling, and eventually, her full-time profession.

Some of Lisa’s most treasured memories are rooted in the jewelry world itself—including meeting the legendary James Brown, who affectionately called her “Little Lisa.” She still recalls the day he noticed her absence from the store, phoned her at home, and sang Ave Maria to lift her spirits while she was sick. It remains one of her most cherished stories.

Today, Lisa creates jewelry using a blend of ancient and contemporary techniques, working exclusively in 18k and 22k gold, sterling silver, and rare, one-of-a-kind gemstones. Her pieces are meticulously crafted—each one a reflection of her technical mastery, artistic curiosity, and devotion to detail.

Lisa is married to Rich Cochran, an environmentalist who leads Tennessee State’s Watershed Monitoring Program. Their home—shared with four demanding, overindulged cats—is a place of laughter, music, and creativity. Together, they love going to concerts— from indy bands to legendary artists from every genre, and everything in between—finding joy in the shared ritual of hearing their favorite songs played live, whether in Nashville or on the road.
