Some people follow the expected path. Cynthia has never been one of those people.

Born in New Jersey but raised in Miami, she was the girl who liked metal and punk music, dressed in black and preferred drama club to the beach scene. While her classmates embraced the Florida lifestyle, Cynthia—known as Cyndi back then—was perfecting her goth aesthetic and acting skills.

Her unconventional approach continued at the University of Miami. Her mom's employment meant free tuition, so after taking class after class that interested her, thinking she’d eventually go to graduate school for Art History, she realized that would result in limited career prospects. The answer to "what next?" came unexpectedly—she literally tripped over her sorority sister's law book. Flipping through those pages changed everything.

After taking the LSATs, working in a law firm and taking a gap year, Cynthia headed to William & Mary for law school. Graduate housing there was a great experience, and it was also where Cyndi became Cynthia—a more professional choice (she thought) for her new chapter. She built a solid legal career: practicing at a law firm in Lexington, Kentucky for four and a half years and then moving to Nashville to join Baker Donelson as an employment lawyer and, after a short stint in legal recruiting, moving in-house as the general counsel for a transportation company.

At a poker game, she met Bobby, a retired Marine injured in Iraq and they married in 2012. When Cynthia decided she wanted a break from work, they didn't just take a vacation—she retired early and they spent two years traveling North America in an RV – criss-crossing the US, Canada and Mexico. In 2019, she was back in Nashville for a visit helping her mom and stepdad with downsizing as they prepared to move to an independent living complex. Cynthia reached out to Latitude Legal, a legal recruiting company that specializes in high level temporary legal positions, to see about a temporary role. This turned her retirement into a sabbatical as she ultimately accepted a role as a legal recruiter with Latitude – serendipitously, as it was perfect timing for her and Bobby to come off the road just before the pandemic hit. She and Bobby now live in Kingston Springs, with their three dogs: Penelope, Juliet, and Lilith. Oh, and Charlotte—Cynthia's pet jumping spider.

Yes, a jumping spider. Despite a fear of arachnids, she has a soft spot for Charlotte.

The goth drama kid is still there, now exploring different art forms: drawing, acrylic painting, coloring, and this year's goal—watercolor painting. She still likes video games as well (and even has a character in a video game named after her online handle, Lexchicky).

From tripping over a law book to building a distinguished legal career, from poker games to RV adventures, from helping her Holocaust survivor mother to thriving in legal recruiting—Cynthia's story is proof that interesting lives rarely follow a straight line.
Cynthia was an absolute joy to photograph and get to know! She may be a lawyer with a razor sharp mind but she doesn’t take herself too seriously and likes to have fun and experience life.
I even met her mom, and she is a character! I see where Cynthia gets her sense of humor and fun from.
