Tamara grew up in Dyersburg, Tennessee, the youngest of two (with one big brother who still enjoys the bragging rights). In high school, she stayed busy lettering in four sports—basketball, volleyball, softball, and track & field—and still found time to be an amateur actress in dozens of plays and theatre events. Beyond the gym and the stage, she was involved in YoungLife, 4‑H, and public speaking, occasionally speaking at churches and in competitions across Tennessee. That love of leadership carried into student government, where she proudly served as Student Body President her senior year.
After graduation, Tamara headed to Union University as a scholastic athlete and double‑majored in Social Work and Political Science. Her original post‑college plan was refreshingly ambitious—teach, preach, and coach basketball—but it didn’t come with a playbook. With encouragement from her political science professor, she took a strategic pivot, sat for the LSAT her senior year, and was accepted to the University of Tennessee College of Law. From there, she built her legal career beginning as an associate attorney in insurance defense and employment law firms, then spent more than a decade in-house as an insurance defense litigator before stepping into broader leadership roles as an insurance executive. Today, her 20+ year legal career continues to evolve: she her mediation firm, launched Alliance Mediation, LLC, and most recently joined Latitude Legal to support Legal Recruiting & Placement—connecting clients with experienced legal talent by drawing on her own wide-ranging experience.
Family is a big part of Tamara’s story—you’ll often hear her mention her parents in conversation—and she proudly embraces her role as “Auntie” in her family of friends. She also enjoys giving back by sharing advice and real-life lessons on the podcast she co-hosts, Against My Better Judgment, available on YouTube and wherever you listen to podcasts.
And then there’s Libby—a lab/coonhound mix who made it to 16 and spent years as Tamara’s loyal sidekick and road-trip companion. They logged plenty of miles together, and Libby never turned down a good car ride, a run, or a little frisbee time. She passed recently and is deeply missed.
I enjoyed getting to know Tamara during her 40 Over 40 Portrait shoot. She has done a lot in a short time and loves living life to the fullest and trying new things!
