One of the most asked questions I get is what do I wear for a photoshoot? I like to address this one often as it can be a barrier to taking that first step and booking a much needed headshot branding photo session.
"I don't know what to wear."
"What if I pick the wrong thing?"
"Do I need to buy something new?"
What you wear DOES matters—so I get the concern. BUT I am here to help.
Your headshots and branding photos should reflect how you show up professionally—whether that's polished and corporate, creative and casual, or somewhere in between. The key is that it feels authentic to your brand and/or your industry.
Think about what you typically wear to client meetings or important work events as a place to start. From there, we'll add variety so you have options for different contexts, especially social media.
The most important thing? Choose outfits you love and feel great in.
This is key: your clothing needs to fit well. Baggy doesn't photograph well and it can actually make you look bigger than you are. Avoid puffy sleeves, oversized blazers, or anything with massive shoulder pads.
Fitted blouses, button-down shirts, and well-tailored jackets look great on camera. Flowy dresses have a place though too, but best if the top is more fitted.
The most important part.
The color looks good on you and matches your branding colors.
If it's not too late, choose your branding color palette with YOUR best colors in mind so you can wear the colors that compliment your skin tone. If you look terrible in pastels, avoid those, even if your brand colors are pastel. Find a complimentary color that looks good on you.
Jewel tones really pop.
Reds, blues, greens, pinks—jewel tones look stunning in headshot lighting. If you can wear these colors, bring them.
Neutrals are always a safe bet.
Black, white, and navy all photograph beautifully. They're classic, professional, and timeless. If you look better in off white or cream, go with those.
What to avoid:
Fluorescent colors, crazy patterns and horizontal stripes.
I recommend bringing 4-5 different looks to your session. Varietyis key. Better to bring your whole closet than not enough! We can narrow it down on shoot day.
If it's there, we can photograph it, if it's not, we can't.
When you book a session with me, we'll have a wardrobe consultation Zoom call before your shoot. We'll go through what you're thinking of wearing, I'll give you feedback, and you'll feel confident in knowing exactly what to bring.
Most people feel so much more confident after that call- one less thing to worry about!
I make the experience fun, easy and one to remember with the result being photos you love and are proud to use in your marketing.
